There is one mistake that interior designers see made more than any other — across every budget, every home, every style. And it has nothing to do with colour, pattern, or material. It has to do with size.
The rug is too small.

It floats in the centre of the room like an island, the sofa and chairs hovering at its edges with nothing connecting them. The room looks unsettled. The rug, however beautiful, looks insignificant. All the money spent on it seems wasted, not because the rug was wrong, but because it was simply not big enough for the space.
If you are choosing a Persian heritage rug — a piece designed to be the foundation of your room — getting the size right is the single most important decision you will make. Here is exactly how to do it.
Why Too Small Ruins Everything
A rug that is too small for its room sends a visual signal that something is off, even if the observer cannot identify it immediately. The human eye reads a room as a whole composition. When the rug does not extend far enough to connect the furniture pieces around it, the composition fragments. The sofa feels like it is floating. The coffee table feels disconnected. The room feels incomplete.
Conversely, a correctly sized rug does something remarkable: it unifies everything. It tells the room what it is. It says: this is the living area; these pieces belong together; this is a considered, finished space.
The rug is the floor plan of your room. Get it right, and everything else falls into place.
The Three Placement Rules Designers Always Use
There are three main ways furniture can relate to a rug — and each has a recommended minimum size:
-
All furniture legs on the rug. The rug extends under all pieces in the seating area. This creates the most unified, polished look. Requires a large rug — typically 9×12 ft (270×360 cm) or bigger for a standard living room.

-
Front legs only on the rug. The most commonly used arrangement. The front legs of the sofa and chairs sit on the rug while the back legs are off. Creates connection without requiring the largest size. Requires a rug of at least 8×10 ft (240×300 cm) for most living rooms.

-
No furniture on the rug. The rug sits entirely within the furniture grouping, visible as a centrepiece. This only works in larger rooms where the rug itself is clearly large enough to hold the space — at least 6×9 ft (180×270 cm), and usually bigger.

The default rule: when in doubt, choose the larger size. Nobody has ever complained that a beautiful rug was too big for their room.
Room-by-Room Size Guide
Living room: For a standard sofa grouping with a coffee table, aim for at least 8×10 ft. A 9×12 or larger is ideal in most modern living rooms and creates that effortlessly grounded look designers achieve.
Dining room: The rug must extend at least 60–75 cm beyond all sides of the table so chairs remain on the rug even when pulled out. Measure your table and add that clearance on every side before choosing a size.
Bedroom: A rug under the bed should extend at least 45–60 cm beyond both sides and the foot of the bed. For a king bed, a 9×12 or 8×10 typically works well. For a queen bed, a 8×10 is often ideal.
Hallway/entryway: Runner rugs should leave 15–20 cm of floor visible on each side. Too wide and the runner loses its graphic impact.
The Tape Trick — Used by Every Professional Decorator
Before you buy anything, lay masking tape on your floor in the dimensions of the rug you are considering. Live with it for a day. Walk around it. Sit in your furniture and look at it. Move the tape if it feels wrong. This fifteen-minute exercise prevents the single most expensive decorating mistake you can make.

You will almost always move the tape outward. Most people's first instinct underestimates the size they need.
One More Thing: Always Use a Rug Pad
Whatever size you choose, a quality rug pad beneath your Persian heritage rug is non-negotiable. It protects the pile, prevents slipping, adds cushioning underfoot, and extends the life of your rug significantly. For a piece you are investing in, it is a small additional cost with a large return.
The Right Rug Is Waiting
